I'm glad you included a picture, Alan, because this is what most people would regard as a Cycle Lamp battery and it's a tad larger! (In fact it is equivalent to half a lantern battery.)

The one you showed, equivalent to an Ever Ready 1829, was mainly used in flat torches - presumably designed to be a more comfortable fit in the pocket than a long round one.
