The same scenario happened to new cars.
The manufacturers would refuse warranty claims if you took your new car to a non franchised dealer/garage for servicing. This has since been stopped as it was pronounced illegal. I believe the only stipulation is the servicing has to be done in a reputable garage............ if you are lucky enough to find one.
