Apple want you to buy a new one, ideally every year. They where fined in Italy for ignoring SOGA (two years) by selling "warranties" to cover second year of items they had retailed direct. SOGA only applies to retailer to consumer. There are calls to make it apply also to the rest of the supply chain to encourage wholesale, importers and manufacturers to improve quality and penalise them for failures. The SOGA leaves the retailer out of pocket.
