I think clever socket design can mitigate the issue? On the inner of the socket. Bigger hole in plastic and springier contact design to recover from larger pin and work reliably with smaller pin.
The ratio of "outer diameter of inner of socket" to "inner diameter of outer metal of plug" (not the locking cover, nor outer of socket) of the interconnected plug and socket sets the impedance, assuming the same plastic, so there is some room for a design that is "compatible", though how "backward compatible" to earlier connectors is a question.
I have some 50 Ohm (radio) and 75 Ohm (Cable TV / DOCSIS over wireless mast gear) N connectors.
It was always my understanding that 75 Ohm and 50 Ohm BNC were not "reliably" interchangeable, but no-one was sure if the smaller socket (75?) was damaged by larger pin (50?).
