In theory 50R and 75R BNCs can be inter-mated without damage. The centre pins are meant to be the same diameter. There is documentation from major manufacturers of BNCs to back this up. It's around online if I can find it again. The impedance difference was done by different amounts of dielectric around the pin. Yet there are persistent claims of 75R sockets being damaged by 50R plugs. I've certainly come across many damaged BNC sockets, the symptom is poor or intermittent contact. Were they all due to 75/50 problems or was it simple wear and tear, plugs with bent pins or heaven know what?
Unless you were using a BNC at the extremes of its frequency rating a few millimetres of 75/50 mismatch didn't matter either.
Never plug a 50R N plug into a 75R N socket. The centre pins are very different diameters and there will be damage.
PS: Found this from Canford, who supply a lot of kit to broadcasters, TV and audio companies. They strongly assert that 50/75 BNCs will mate without damage. Presumably it's possible that some BNC plugs are not made to the relevant standards and hence could cause damage to some sockets of either impedance.
