Well, that will teach me not to make assumptions!
The microphones in question were Grampian DP4s from memory - 50kΩ impedance. There was only one microphone input on the amplifier, so I had built a simple mixer to handle the multi-mike issue. The problem was definitely isolated to that particular cable. Any other combinations of microphone/cable/input worked fine ...
