Heath-Robinson-Style One Valve Receiver

I have come across them on quite a number of occasions. The reason I hadn't the faintest idea what they were is because of the wording "Spade tuning!" I seem to remember that I was not particularly impressed by the performance of them. The last one I had was in a car radio valve receiver.
