Hi Chaps.
I have been closely watching the thread and the replies.
I have the advantage in knowing that the mains transformer and outputs are all OK, I accept that the outputs are not Ultra Linear but they are OK albeit not the best in the world.
I think that the £400 I have quoted is OK, I've very little in the way of overheads, a massive stock of top quality resistors, a good stock of good caps and rolls of different cables. The rebuild wont need expensive components as the valves are actually OK, so its time, patience and a neat concise job.
I have given the customer the option of going Ultra Linear which he wants to do but not at this time.
My idea is to strip the amp to bare bones and start again loosely using the Mullard 5-20 design, EF86-ECC83 but retaining the KT88 outputs, I did this some years ago and the amp was extremely good. It will work fine with non UL outputs and being honest going UL wont really make a huge difference.
On a different note a customer picked up a Fender Bassman 50 from me today, pronounced scrap by two other repairers, he was over the moon that it was repaired and delighted with the quality of work done, I even got a good tip
He brought with him the big Fender speaker cabinet for the final test. After the testing I thought I'd try the Mullard 3-3 for a laugh.............. well we both just about took a heart attack at the volume and quality, well impressed.
