Hi Dick, 50's and 60's woodies should be easy to find and cheap. Pretty standard circuits too
I probably have the circuits for most of them if you need them.
Fairly local as well, over at NE16

50's/60's woodies sounds like a Beach Boys song.....................should be just what I'm looking for !

I heard of a guy who used one of these as a home for a 5w guitar amp using the original speaker which I quite like the idea of, & there's also a company that makes guitar amps in vintage looking TV style cabs (speaker grille instead of tube).............that also appeals !

It's not as easy as I thought to find a radio, high prices for unknown viability stuff (everybody selling one seems to think old radio's are valuable antiques)  & the p&p mostly kills fleabay buys

I'll keep looking
