BTW, Alan has used "French" and "verge" in the same post. Beware of using "verge" as a French word. The warning sign "soft verges" commonly found in England is a source of ribald amusement to our gallic cousins. I won't explain any further as it would probably contravene forum rules.

Probably would - I always though that usage was Middle English, not French, but the two are very intertwined...
