I have just ordered one of those. It will be extremely useful for hardening and tempering home-made silver steel cutting tools.
The silver steel bar or plate is shaped by machining/grinding as requires - such as a form tool to finish-turn a finial or a special clock wheel fly cutter. The finished item is then heated to cherry red and quenched in water or oil which makes the steel very hard but brittle. It is then tempered by heating it again to a straw colour (for average hardness) and then allowed to cool in air. The result is a tool that can be used in a lathe etc. to cut mild steel and alloys.
