When we went over to Word Processing at where I worked they got shot of all the Typewriters. I snaffled one for the Mrs as she can type properly. It was an enormous Electric thing which actually moved the Carriage not a Head as in later ones. It was driven by an enormous Electric Motor. When you touched, and I mean touched, a Key there was a mechanical OR which tripped a Mechanical Monostable Clutch which executed the required Function. Asking it to execute a Carriage Return from the far right of the Paper was a wonder to behold. If you didn't have it on a very firm surface it would walk about. The Mrs said it was a proper Electric Typewriter. In all honesty if frightened me and with the advent of PCs and decent home Printers I quietly got shot of it.
Sometimes I wish I hadn't, but not often.
