Did SA use Band 1 or Band 3 for their TV system or did they opt for UHF right from the start?

AFAIK SA didn't use band 1 for TV, just band 3 & UHF. Wonder if they didn't use band 1 as they'd seen what problems we & other Counties had with co-channel interference in summer, plus ignition interference from cars/mopeds?
