I wonder how the PL259 is wired? The Eddystone is best on a balanced fed aerial. What I have done with my set is to feed it from my loop via one of my famous toroid RF transformers, with experimentation a centre tapped secondary from the toroid gives me the best performance on the set.
Although mine has been repainted at some time it is in good condition especially inside with it being virtually 100% when I got it. It came from a Radio Amateur in Paisley in 2010 with a massive pile of other stuff that totally filled my Fiat Doblo at the time.
Since I've had the set I've replaced the smoothing caps as they were slightly leaky and three of the TCC metal clad decouplers were also leaking these were also replaced.
I use the set a lot as it works really well.
