I had quite a few radios given to me during my child hood, none of them survived to the present day. They were taken apart and adapted too many times, till eventually they stopped altogether or I got a new one to play with. I was the same with watches and clocks.
I guess it left me feeling a bit guilty and probably accounts for my fascination with them now and the urge to earn forgiveness from all the old tatty radios I have been repairing in the recent years.
KB TRP31 Dancetime
Kolster Brandes GR40
PYE MODEL P31MBQ, Given to me by an aunt, I replaced the damaged metal rectifier with a small valve type, I cant remember now how I achieved this when I was only about 12 at the time.
KB Scarlet Rhapsody, this was my sisters, and I used to listen to R Luxembourg under the bedclothes at night.
Regentone Regenteener BT23, Dads little portable or it was until I took it apart once too many times, I was fascinated by the rows of brightly coloured resistors.
Regentone BT18 Minim, belonged to my aunts, it also came apart a few times with out their knowledge, still worked the last time I saw it.
RGD RR214 / KB KR016, our first FM radio, used to listen to pick of the pops on it, and record onto my Crown Cassette recorder.
HMV 1107, this is another one which I had loads of fun with. Adjusted to receive the top band, and used to listen to fishing skippers chatting to their wives on the ship to shore radio.
The first radio I actually remember buying myself was a second generation Sinclair Micro 6, the Micromatic, to replace the one I got for Christmas about 3 years earlier.
So you can see the over whelming source of my child hood radios were of the KB, RDG, Regentone breed.
I have replaced 5 of the above and they are now in my collection working nicely. But I am still looking for a replacement for the Dancetime record player, Regenteener, and the RGD RR214 "International"
Mike
