It has to be something that will adhere to a polished glass surface but whatever was used in production, as I'm sure we all know very well, is prone to rub off very easily when you least want it too - especially after the valve has been in service for some time!
At least with the etched batch codes that Philips used you could always go through your stock looking for a match if you didn't know what the valve came out of!
