Hi,
Many thanks Richard; I don’t know about perfection but I’ve certainly done my best and hope it comes up to expectations. The tip about using natural yogurt to age new items is a good one and many have used this to age garden ornaments such as statues; I’ll let my chimney age gracefully though. The tornado must have been frightening to all concerned and although property can be repaired or replaced I hope there were no injuries.
Bron and I had a trip out yesterday and bought the new chimney pot which is in two parts; it was in a clearance sale at £25 plus VAT making it £30 and a real bargain; the company we bought it from makes chimney pots and they are selling 34 of these off cheaply.
With it home and sitting on the patio I thought what have I done as it looked huge but once I had installed the base onto the chimney stack it looked fine. I made a lightweight wooden frame 1” thick and clamped this to the stack; with the pot base located and double checked for position I mixed up some concrete and secured the base.
Last night at 10 o’clock the weather forecast was for frost so once again I was on the roof this time to add frost protection; I doubled an old electric blanket cutting a hole in it and dropped it over the chimney pot base tying it with rope. We’ve not had frost for a while so it’s good to know my luck hasn’t changed!!
This afternoon I removed the wooden frame and blanket to find everything OK. I then mixed some mortar consisting of sharp sand and cement and ran a fillet around the edge of the concrete to fully seal it then to complete the job I added the top section of the chimney pot.
I’m pleased now that I went to all the extra trouble as the chimney looks well and should be maintenance free for many years to come. The materials only cost about £80 including the two piece pot making this a very cheap job; had we got someone in to do the work I’m sure it would have made my wallet suffer. It was hard work but very satisfying and gave me a good physical workout; I‘m sure I’ve lost weight.
Kind regards, Col.
