Automatic volume gain....or....on a more technical note automatic voltage gain...or on an even more technical note a typo erroe.

Yes, automatic voltage gain might have been on my subconscious mind.  Maybe it's something that just appeared automatically. I haven't analysed the term in any way but if I had to it would mean "negative gain" in the sense I was thinking at the time. I'll check to see if it's used in my HAM book.

At any rate, the principle is basic. The anode of the AVC tube doesn't conduct due to bias unless the signal is strong enough to overcome the bias. Once that happens, electrons flow from the anode along the AVC line. Resistors can be used to direct the flow for different bias points in rarer cases. This will cause a more negative potential on the Mixer grid and also there ought to be a voltage drop between cathode and anode of the said mixer tube. Voltage control is a better term but AVG just sprang up somewhere.
