It is important to adhere to this as stray capacitances can seriously reduce the performance of the set WRT RF & IF stages.
If you've not done any work in those stages then it's likely to be another fault.
One thing that does come to mind is a radio that's been damp stored, it may have moisture trapped in aerial and oscillator coils that will effect the "Q" of the inductors, this can significantly effect performance and the tracking of the tuning. These problems often only show up on Medium Wave and Long Wave, the different construction of the Short wave coils are usually not effected by moisture nearly as much.
This is true but it really did boil down to having to choose a doable strategy. Would I realistically have been able to dismantle most of the chassis components and then hope I could put it all back as it was. It could have been a tougher option maybe than making a radio from scratch. Access has been a big factor with this radio.

You may have a double fault scenario then. If the new caps are "dangling Mr Mannering" then stray capacitance wont help, if the sets been damp for a long time you may have moisture problems in Aerial, Oscillator and IF coils. Hopefully not as that could be a bit of a pig to fix without a signal generator and a scope.
Without taking offence the 1124 is no more difficult to work on than many other set. Possibly the lack of room on your boat and working on a bed is the biggest problem. You need to turn the kitchen into a workshop
