On my AC97, same switch coil arrangement, I actually took out the switch circlip holding the rotor. Not too hard with sharp side cutters but practice on old pots first !! It does allow the rotor to be pushed back giving better access. There was lots of goo and gunge under mine. It did allow better cleaning I think.
I'm not sure about Servisol switch cleaner although I did use it for years. It doesn't seem to do a job that lasts very long before intermittency is back. De-Oxit as sold at the BVWS stall seems far better even though it is expensive, last for ages of course.
