I've got a long way to go in this. I started out with Chas Miller's radio repair book but didn't progress beyond basic theory till I had a few old radios to mess with. As of yet, I don't have any background in radio construction but imagine it could happen as time passes by. For now, I'm still scheduled to repair about another 7 tube radio sets. And that's after I finish the HMV.
I try to organise my work a bit more these days so I stick with doing one radio at a time. The last two were more difficult repairs than average as both sets were abandoned non-runners. I think my next project will be a relaxing one - something I can do without breaking into a sweat. For example, a friend has a Pye radio that crackles a lot on the volume. I can fix that by eliminating leaky capacitors and, as the radio works already, that's a good head start. I also have another Pye that is a non-runner but looks easier in its layout and circuits to work on.
I dare say I'll be building something not too far off into the future.
