Bought this at the Radiophile auction at Gnosall. It was sat on the floor with a control flap that would not open, being ignored.
Its the one with a mains power pack so no battery problems. It has never had a leaky one inside. Hurrah!
In fact someone has removed all the wiring for batteries completely, I shall not be putting it back either, there is no point as I never use any set on batteries.
Initial inspection showed a clean set, the flap was very stiff to open. Volume control knob was a huge brown thing off a tv tuner I think, instead of the white outer knob same as the tuning.
All valves present though 2 were in the wrong locations. Dial cord intact but tuner drive cord snapped. The white knob missing, cover almost immovable without risking breaking it off, but otherwise not bad, no serious dents in the 'speaker grill, rexine dirty but intact. Only one plastic stud and claw broken off one of the plastic side panels, though each had always had one claw clip in the top corner missing, presumably too difficult to fit in the factory!
Electrically a mess. Quick check showed open circuit at the mains lead because the tapping for 230v had been blown off the mains transformer due to it shorting to the neutral heat fuse link. No HT short, filament circuit OK
One output valve non original, all filaments OK thankfully. Tuning scale lamps O/C. Output grid coupling cap leaky.
But an OK output transformer, good 'speaker and valves made it worthwhile to fix, if only I can sort that control flap.
The flap was just too big for its metal frame, which someone had already had a file on, and the gap in the cabinet. So I took it all apart, brass bushes and spring claw clips hold it all together but it comes out as an assembly with the drive cord once the dial lamp wires have been removed and 3 screws in the metal frame.
I carefully reduced the length of the flap by rubbing it on a sheet of emery till it was a proper fit again. Perhaps the plastic had grown over the years. Reassembled with new bulbs it is fine.
A tricky repair to the fragments of winding tapping sticking out of the transformer winding, reconnecting them to the tag board restored the transformer to working condition. Replaced the leaky caps, checked the heater voltage was correct, cleaned up generally and heat soaked for a day, I have a working radio again.
Saw Mike Barker (Murphy Mad, sent you a pm Mike) at Golborne swap meet, recons he may have a knob for it, if so it is done.
Next please............Oh, Mike "made" me take 2 more away from Golborne. Ah, well there is still room in the farm.
