The German "no-frills" radio used in wartime Germany was the Volksempfaenger pictured below. This radio literally bombarded the German people with speeches made by Hitler. It was forbidden to attempt to tune into foreign broadcasts accounts of the war by using larger aerials or mechanical adjustment. To be caught could mean you'd be shot as a traitor.
I think huge amounts of technology emerged out of from Germany after the end of WW2 as many scientists were snapped up by the U.S., especially with regard to the V2 rockets. I'd imagine some of the more upmarket radios were very high quality.
Maybe the high prices has something to do with the historical context of these radios. It reflects a very dark period of history.
