The Red Wire should go to the End of the Battery which is labelled +
The Black - Negative - Wire should go to one of the Taps which are Labelled progressively from the +.
When Transistors were staring to become available at a sensible Price I used to use them for 'Projects' aka 'Messing about' as my Mum put it
