Presumably the Macbook has the up to date driver installed for the printer? I don't have a Macbook any more, but when I did, I needed to install the driver for my printer, whereas my i-pad seems to just print from any printer to which it can connect wirelessly.
Maybe a query on the Mac Forum would produce and answer?
