I've bought Duracell from supermarkets, stores which have a high turnover, only to have them leak within the intended recipient in a matter of days. First sign being a rusty brown watery fluid emanating from the case seal, usually at the negative end. One of the worst was a Duracell PP3 in a DVM, lasted a few days when I heard a muffled bang but thought nothing of it until I tried using the DVM the next day. On investigation the rear of the PP3 had shattered with the cell plates poking out of one corner. The whole thing has put me right off Duracell as a brand, you don't expect this sort of thing from what is supposed to be a premium battery. Tried taking the batteries back to the store and was told "we don't sell fake" and you need to take it up with the manf.
Nowadays I use Sanyo, Panasonic or Sony branded cells, with Kodak a very close alternative. They do the job and crucially they don't leak, especially in mission critical uses like smoke alarms.
