Phew! Glad you sorted it as Linux frightens me too 
My first reaction was "surely you just need to turn NumLock off?", but I'm 100% sure that you would have already done that. All I can say is that NumLock behaves as expected on this Ubuntu machine.
Personally, I use the regular cursor keys, but that's because I never had the smaller keyboards - back when those were popular, I couldn't be separated from a BBC Micro! But I've just found a miniature space-saving keyboard for the workshop PC, and I know that I'm going to have months of pain trying to get used to that
