Instead of all this faffing about you could just use a USB Drive. I've got one - extra - plugged into this M/C and it works fine.

You mentioned it on the other thread. Yes, it's certainly an option. And useful to have one about for when someone brings you a laptop that doesn't have an optical drive.

Slightly downsides: you might pay slightly more for it, and the external types are often the slower low-profile laptop types. If the PC has the bays, it's usually better to go for the standard internal component. But it's marginal; either works equally well for most purposes.

Anyway, optical media is slowly dying out in favour of memory sticks (especially since most computers made in the last decade can boot from USB memory sticks). I only put CD-ROMs in the drive very occasionally - the drive is mostly for ripping audio CDs these days.
