I suspect that the major problem may well be the construction of the 'Black Box'. Mine was relatively easy as the Cardboard just pealed off with a bit of warming. Yours looks much more solid.

Also, the Resistors may have bad contacts. There's a lot of guff about it in the UKVRR Link above and the follow-up Thread.
