If your source is stereo and the destination is mono then you definitely need to use series resistors - otherwise you will be joining two low impedance outputs together - but I think you already know that.
However, you say the unit has a stereo amplifier so I don't think the fact there's a AM radio in it is relevant.
I would simply keep both channels separate and connect the inputs to the tops of the volume controls via suitable switching.
