Your point about valves. Personally I think the valve sets are easier to work on than transistor sets. I think they're the best way to learn how radios work in pure electrical terms. I think they provide a base you can use to advance with more sophisticated types of radio. My GEC is a very simple design and I've spent some time trying to find out where the grid stopper resistor is, measure its resistance and locate the AVC decoupling and so on. Soldering I always found stressful so I've tried to improve on that aspect.
The only real point of concern is always voltage. I was getting a bit nervous doing tests at around 300 volts. I try to work in absolute silence. I also work one handed like the old-timers.
Ultimately I'd love to be able to repair and fix up vintage car radios but I feel that is too advanced at the moment.
