I must admit that Maplin nowadays for me is a shop of last resort and only if I'm in the area shopping for something else. Strangely enough, Maplin have an Ebay shop and have no issues supplying goods including PCB development kit, which implies that rather than keep the items in the shop its cheaper to stock and dispatch from the central warehouse.
I suspect that long term Maplin will shrink inwards, concentrating on the online business to survive whilst shutting down or selling off the local shops.
