What a day of frustration and grief yesterday but a happy ending. I had restrung the tuning dial using a kind of revolutionary, simpler system where I just knotted the whole string and did without a tension spring. Amazingly it worked so I later decided to retest the radio. Then I winded up with no stations being received at all and just a barber-shop buzz, even with aerial connected. So, I was doing endless meter tests and puzzled as to why the set wouldn't pick up. Finally, it turned out to be an issue with the waveband switch. I managed to get lots of stations in the end but the waveband switch will need to be overhauled later. Anyway, given this radio hasn't had much use for some years I just let it play away. It was playing while I tidied up for about an hour and sounds fine, although I don't think a forties set can compare with later improved audio.
I was always a bit worried about over-heating the film capacitors but these seem to have endured O.K.
Soon I'll be picking up a GEC AC DC set to add to the list of radios that heavens knows how I'll ever get working (due to the time involved). I think I'm learning how much work and time is needed to get a radio as it should be so it's safe and running normally.
