Well I've had a furtle around with transistors, with not much in the way of success, so I slightly modified a 555 circuit I posted earlier, to include a variable resistor to enable the 'on' period to be adjustable from what I think should give me an 'on' period of up to about 12 seconds. I've designed, etched and built a PCB, incorporating a little bridge rectifier to provide DC for the circuit from the AC bell transformer, but rather than the relay come on when the 'bell push' is pressed, it comes on right away. Can't see that the PCB layout is wrong as compared to the circuit. I note that pin 5 is left floating - don't know if that's an issue - I've seen other circuits in which it's tied to ground via a .01uF. I've attached such a circuit in which I've highlighted pin 5, and also that it only has a 4k7 resistor on pin 2 rather than a potential divider. (The second IC in that circuit has no relevance to my needs as it is to provide an audio output, eeding pin 4 of IC2 from pin 3 of IC1. All I need is for pin 3 of IC1 to go high for several seconds).
Can anyone postulate on what might cause the relay to come on right away, rather than when the bell push is pressed please?
As I understand it, the circuit starts off with pin 2, fed from the potential divider formed by the 10k and 1 meg resistor being high, then when the bell push is pressed it monetarily pulls pin 1 low to take pin3 high for the duration of the timed period, after which the 555 resets taking pin 3 low. (I'm using a standard NE555 IC by the way). I've attached the circuit, PCB layout and component overlay and the alternative circuit.
Any thoughts please?
(Incidentally, the relay a two-pole change-over one which plugs into a 16-pin DIL IC socket, so I've just paralleled the contacts of the two poles, as will be seen on the PCB layout).
