Most nixies are quite cheap - its only very specific ones that are silly money... of the 150-odd types I have in stock, only maybe 10 cost more than USD 50 each and only 4 are more than a USD 100 each, and then only because they are very large and rare.
CD47/GR414s can go for euro 500 each as they almost never appear and are pretty much the largest nixie ever made (thought there is an incredibly rare French one that, technically, may be bigger).
Z568s are now very expensive - over USD 250 - as they are just extremely rare and very beautiful. I bought a load of these about 20 years ago when they were reasonably cheap (USD 25 ea.) and built clocks with them, e.g. the one below...
There is no real need to rip nice test kit apart to get at the displays... (generally!)
