I don't understand the Rating Plate Rob.
As far as I can see it does say 1/4 HP. However, it also says 3.2A which equates to 1HP.
Continuous Rating will also make it bigger, as will age - older Motors tend to be bigger because the Materials used wouldn't stand very high Temperatures.
Anyway, you can use it on your Lathes.
A Sewing Machine Motor and Foot Pedal are probably a better bet for your application.
