My IPOD headphone output socket output is peaking at 1Vpp into the scope. That should be enough signal for all but the deafest of audio amplifiers.
If opting for option 1 it would be worth adding a DC blocking capacitor before the probe,. It might just save the output stage in the event the probe touching the wrong place.
