Head is the right term. The fuse is usually called a cutout. The paper insulated cables under the ground really are very good indeed provided they haven't suffered mechanical damage. They'll take large short term overloads without complaining. Some are like yours, Mark, with lots of bitumen and armouring. Some are lead sheathed.
