If it stops it could loose all your data or a large part of it.
The quickest solution is to back up all the data to another hard drive and run a disk partitioning utility and install another disk operating system if windows was not supplied with the computer in a form that allows you to install to a new disk.
Getting used to Linux takes a couple of months but with all the trouble windows is causing these days the time taken doing this will pay you back in 6 months to 1 year due to improved reliability.
