In the meantime, further examination of the mechanism reveals that there is no worm gear on the spindle of the loading motor, so it spins without driving anything. Where the worm gear went is a mystery, unless it's wedged inside the deck somewhere! Today I checked with JVC's spares distribrutors, and, as expected, was told that the part involved is no longer available. Hardly surprising, given that the player is over 20 years old!
