Hi Mike,
I've just seen this thread. Its a very similar movement to the one I have in a black slate mantle clock from around the 1890's and is almost certainly French. Its most likely to be an 8 day movement and it would have been on a bell (mine sounds very sweet when its working). I'll find some pics of mine but in the mean time have a look at the following:

Slate clock bodies can be found that will take the movement you have.
