Ah yes: academic exercises - I remember them well! When I was studying at college, learning all about the equivalent ccts. of transistors, etc., the 'topic' of biassing transistors was never covered. Much the same at school: "Here we have a mass sliding on a frictionless plane . . . "; "Ignore the weight of the strings in the pulleys" . . . "Assume that the solution remains at the same temperature" . . . when it's on the bench, by the sink, with the sunlight streaming in through the window on a hot summer's day. 
However, to be fair, if the fundamental principles are not firmly rooted in the first place, any advancements will be doomed to failure.
