I prefer the mechanical turns counters; if you back off a few turns to correct something, the counter still keeps track. On my winder I have a three-digit counter driven by a 100-tooth gear meshed with a worm (1/4-28 thread actually) cut into the shaft. So it counts tens, hundreds, thousands. I can estimate single turns.
