Having just had a new consumer unit and all the hassle of testing that goes with it we had our first drop out of one of the two ECBs !! Why? I don't know and there is so much on this one (almost the whole house) that even thinking back "what did I plug in and how long has it been out" provided no clues.
The other one is used for electrics outside: garage and security lights etc. If someone cuts a wire to a light it cant take off power to the rest of the building.
But what concerned me about the cut out was both the fridge/ freezer and freezer, in the utility room, losing power. So I have got 'sparks' coming back today to fit a third ECB (there is one unused space on the panel) and reconfigure so that the sockets for the utility room are just on that. Anything else tripping in the house cant affect them.
To me, if I was wiring in these panels all the time, I would advise customers to always have fridges and freezers on there are own ECB.
Glad the cut out occurred whilst we were here and the improvement can be made.
