If you still have a problem with the upper guide adjusting rod Bob I'll have a look at mine to see how it comes out but I think it is easy enough to withdraw. It's not on a key-way but you will have to remove the locking adjuster because there is a flat on the shaft?
Regarding removing the upper band-wheel from its spindle if I recall correctly there is a threaded ring nut on the end of the spindle having a couple of flats to engage a spanner; remove this and the wheel should pull free with its bearings? Remove the outer dust cover (three screws) to reveal the ring nut. Any problems and again I'll check mine for you. Hope this helps.
