Can you post any close up pictures of the unit?
I'm not too well up on these things but it sounds like a balanced armature speaker, if so then the armature needs to be adjusted for neutral attraction to either of the magnets poles, if the armature makes contact with the pole then I don't think you will get any meaningful sound out.
