I hear what you are saying - I have tried a usb/IDE converter on a DVD drive and mounted that as one of the drives. Naturally, you will need separate power to the drive and converter as the Pi won't support much on its usb ports. Then the RaspBMC will look at it just like any other drive. Audio out isn't such good quality, so maybe a separate sound card too. If your collection was ripped, then everything would be much easier as your collection could be stored on a usb pen drive, as I have done.
I even went so far as putting a 4-inch LCD display for the front-end, but the text was far too small to read. Might try a 7-inch touch screen next.
