So, removed the Motor and dumped it on the Bench.
Herewith the full horror.
The Fan is horribly bent which implies to me that it had stalled.
The area around the Start Capacitor looks as though it's been very hot - the plastic Enclosure has disintegrated. The Enclosure for the Run Capaitor has also suffered but I suspect that's a side effect of the overall temperature. The Capacitors themselves look OK but I haven't measured them yet.
The Bearings still sounds OK and it does go round.
By the way, it's one of Col's.
Where does the Silver Label come into the scheme of things young Col?
So, what about the Windings? Without taking it to bits they look very brown and smell horrible. However, they both Megger OK to both the Frame and each other. I was beginning to feel a bit more optimistic at this stage until I measured the Winding Resistance - they both read about 8R. That's not right I don't think as one should read a lot higher than the other, although I can't remember which way round without looking it up. I fear there's shorted Turns in there
The obvious thing to do was to fit another Motor. After some poking about I located a 3/4 hp Clarke which looked promising. It worked - went round on the Bench -and even had the same Shaft size and Hole spacing, so worth a try. Fitting it and wiring up was a bit fiddly but I prevailed. Added some Oil and fired it up. It struggled a bit to get going as there was still some Pressure in the Tank, but looked promising. Unfortunately it stalled before it reached the Trip Pressure of 150 psi. Well, the old Motor was 1 hp and had the benefit of a Run Capacitor so would have provided more Run Torque. The other problem was that it got very hot. OK, modern Motors do, but that hot? I couldn't keep my hand on it. Well I don't really expect a Clarke Motor to provide its full Output for any length of time, so I wasn't surprised.
The solution is to 'Unload' it a bit by fitting a smaller Pulley. It will take longer to run up to full Pressure but that doesn't worry be. Again, after some poking about I found a smaller Pulley, and it even had the right sized Hole. However, despite having collected a plethora of Belts over the years I haven't got one of the right size.
So, I've come to a grinding halt. For the sake of a Belt I might as well give it a try, but I've no great hopes.
