Yes, I know exactly what you mean. It's always been a dream of mine that one day I can have a 'shop where all the bits 'n' pieces will be in that one place, but somehow I don't think it will ever happen.
Mind you, here's a little tale that is relevant and may be of interest.
We moved here 13+ years ago. About 2 years ago, I began a hunt for a GDO + coils which I built in the early '70s. It wasn't anything special, but it worked as a GDO; it was based on a P.W. design. Having spent many fruitless hours to no avail, I slowly & reluctantly concluded that I must have dumped it when we moved.
Although I found that really hard to believe, knowing (now) that I did indeed part company with many things that I realise now have a considerable value, I could come to no other logical conclusion. So you can image my extreme surprise - and utter delight - when only last week, SWMBO was rummaging around in a dark and forgotten corner of the attic and said "Err, this box looks like it contains some of your stuff!" And lo and behold! There it was, covered in dust & grime, etc. However, not only was that GDO + coils in that box, but a lot of other useful stuff, too - including a tuned-line VHF filter that I swear I have used in the workshop in the recent years.
Psychologists have long recognised that people can have 'false memories': this is clearly such an example, but one with a happy ending.
