Don't know how I missed that page, Colin. Anyhow I'll order the ALPS rptary encoder from CPC (RE04225), fit it, and hopefully, the CD740 will then be as good as new. I see from a sticker inside, that it dates from 2003, so perhaps it's not surprising that Creative no longer supply spares for it.
Update 26/04/2014. Having fitted the RE04225 rotary encoder, I'm pleased to say the CD740 now works perfectly. A fair amount of dismantling/reassembling was needed to replace the encoder, but it was worth it. In my opinion the CD740 is superior to the much hyped BOSE 'wave radio', both in performance and build quality, with a much better slot loading CD player, plus a 3.5" Wooffer, which, although mounted facing downwards, gives a good acount of itself. Pity someone doesn't produce something like that todat!
